Overnighter Hike on the ALT


WVSTA’s First 50th-Anniversary-Themed Backpack Trip of 2024 on Section 4 North

Join us for an organized hike on West Virginias longest hiking trail. Explore a portion of the Allegheny Trail along Section 4, Jerrys Run.

When:  March 22-24, 2024

Where: ALT S4N, Brushy Mtn, ALT 701A
ALT Section 4 North on 701A between I-64 Jerrys Run exit and Hematite, VA.

What:  March 22: meet and car camp at Jerrys Run dispersed camping area.

March 23: Early morn set up shuttle between Jerrys Run and Hematite, then backpack an easy 3-4 miles to a nice camp spot.

March 24: Relatively easy backpack out 3-4 miles to Hematite, then shuttle drivers back to cars at Jerrys Run.

This is a WVSTA-ALT history-themed trip, so we will learn a good deal around our campfires about the first couple of decades of the ALT development, private and public landowner cooperation, and potential opportunities to fill in the gap in the ALT between S4N and S4S.  Natural history lessons will be taught as well.  We will also see evidence of the iron industry that once flourished around Hematite, VA.

Who:   Doug Wood will lead anybody with winter backpack experience on this trip. We reserve the option of canceling a few days before for inclement weather conditions or other reasons.

This event is FREE and participants will receive confirmation 2 days prior to the event.
